With Bulletin for February 12 Service

February 13, 2023

Dear St. Paul’s Church Family,

Warm greetings from frigid Nantucket! We awakened this morning to find the rectory’s windows iced over, our rhododendron leaves shriveled, and a windchill factor temperature of -20 degrees. Yikes! The fierce winds are finally beginning to subside, the sun is out, and the forecast again promising unseasonably warm weather ahead. We’ll take it.

I was in a parish meeting recently where a participant opined, “Nobody knows what is going on at St. Paul’s.” I was taken aback, to say the least. Sadly the person does not come to church, so has not heard my sermon references or Sunday announcements about our far flung community services and our gracious hospitality. Although they receive our weekly Parish Updates and our quarterly newsletter Tidings - our Communication Committee’s masterpiece - they noted, “No one has time to read.”

Although our parish leadership has long attempted to share information as able, there were old criticisms afoot when I arrived in 2018 about lack of transparency. The concern for confidentiality had prevented the details of some issues from being shared publicly, to the dissatisfaction of some. Blessedly, there has been a sea change in our parish’s transparency and regular communications, with Peter Barnes and Patsy Wright creatively leading those efforts. If only people had time to read and attend church!

We are celebrating our final three Sundays of Epiphany before we enter into the penitential season of Lent. As we continue to focus on the image of light, I rejoice that God’s light shines forth from us at St. Paul’s Church in Nantucket, both individually and collectively. In tomorrow’s Gospel, Jesus is quoted as saying, “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” O Lord, let it be so.

The peace and joy of Christ,

Max

Thank your for supporting our compassionate work in the community! If you are able to give of your time or talent with any of these volunteer opportunities, please contact the St. Paul’s Mission Committee.

LAUNDRY LOVE

This year will be the sixth year that the St. Paul’s Mission Committee’s Laundry Love program has provided laundry assistance to fellow islanders designated as needing a hand with its cost. At the height of the pandemic, the SPMC had to change its traditional in-person assistance to a monthly mailing of laundry cards to program participants. Thankfully, the Laundry Love volunteers have now resumed in-person laundry assistance at Holdgate’s Island Laundry. St. Paul’s provides laundry cards to other community non-profits for their own discretionary distribution. Program Director: Randall Wight

SCHOOL SNACKS PROGRAM

St. Paul’s has had the privilege of assisting the Nantucket

Community School in supporting the children of Nantucket since 2021. St. Paul’s provides daily snacks for all of the children enrolled in Nantucket Community School programs. These include applesauce, Goldfish, Sun Chips, and Smartfood popcorn. The snacks are available every school day and for summer programs, and are welcomed by all families. Program Director: Dorothy Baker

READY, SET, READ

Building on our initial work with the Snack Program, and at the  Nantucket Community School, St. Paul’s provides volunteer readers for “Ready, Set, Read.” This is a reading program for kindergarten students enrolled in the NCS Extended Day, an after-school program. A dedicated group of volunteers from the parish read weekly with students, one-on-one, at the elementary school. The books we read with the children are selected by the school’s Coordinator of Early Childhood Education. The program was brought to NCS and originally funded by a generous donor who supplied the initial books (and the tote bags used to ferry them). Additional books to replenish the library have been donated by our rector, Father Max. Program Director: Dorothy Baker

FOOD PANTRY

St. Paul’s has long supported the Nantucket Food Pantry and donates food and supplies to it on a weekly basis. We welcome other members of the community who would like to contribute to that   effort. Please pick up one of our blue bags (with a shopping list    enclosed) and when you return it to us, it will go directly to the Food Pantry. Program Director: Libby Tracey

SUPPERS PROGRAM

Our parish initiated “St. Paul’s Suppers” in May 2020 to serve our fellow islanders, with an emphasis on helping individuals and families affected by the pandemic. Ruth and Tim Pitts of Centre Street Bistro prepare nutritious meals every Wednesday at St Paul’s. The meals are then delivered by our volunteers. Presently, we deliver them to about 70 households. This year, St. Paul’s Suppers Program will also continue to provide meals to A Safe Place and The Warming Place. Both organizations provide critical support for the island community. Bakers are especially needed now for the desserts included. Program Directors: Sheila Daume and Sarah Ellis

FAIRWINDS SUPPORT

The parish actively supports Fairwinds, Nantucket’s only full-time Mental Health and Addiction Counseling Center. During the isolating years of the pandemic, St. Paul’s was able to provide meal and gift cards to the Fairwinds counseling staff in recognition of its especially challenging workload. As 2023 begins, the SPMC looks forward to hosting in-person events for Fairwinds staff as a “thank you” for its  immeasurable contribution to our community's overall health. Program Director: Caroline Ellis

J1 BIKE PROGRAM

St. Paul’s has collected a library of twenty bicycles to lend to J1 Visa international students. We are looking for assistance with repairs and providing helmets and lights. Program Director: Father Max
