With Bulletin For January 16 Service

January 15, 2022

Dear St. Paul’s Church Family,
I hope this email finds you well and that you are experiencing the peace of Christ in the midst of the storminess out there this weekend. The sun is finally back out on The Gray Lady, and tomorrow’s weather looks much more promising for our church going. During this Epiphany season, we explore and celebrate the countless ways that the glory of God is revealed in and through Jesus Christ.
Tomorrow’s Gospel is John 2:1-11, the wondrous scene of Jesus’ first miracle at the wedding at Cana, when Jesus turned water into wine. To me, the wine here symbolizes the joy that God desires for us. Christ reveals that God cares not only for our spiritual and physical wellbeing, but also for our emotional wellbeing. And of course they are all three interconnected.
Please join us Monday at 6:00 pm for Nantucket Interfaith Council’s broadcast, and plan on participating in next Sunday’s Parish Annual Meeting. See you at church!
Blessings
Max

A Summary of Vestry Actions taken at the December 16, 2021, Meeting:

TREASURER’S REPORT
The 2022 Budget is fairly conservative and purposely more detailed than in prior years. The Vestry is aware that capital expenditures, not included in the Budget, will be occurring in 2022. “The budget raises a number of issues,” because fundraising in times of Covid makes it very hard to plan and budget” noted treasurer Martin McKerrow. Campus needs are still ongoing; one area of the rectory roof is in need of repair and the church roof also has some needed repairs to be addressed.

STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE UPDATE
St Paul’s has received 132 pledges to date; 75 were increases, 45 unchanged, and 12 reduced. We’ve also received 23 new pledges, which is very positive. Last year at this time we had 100 pledges, so this year we are ahead of last year.

CAMPUS COMMITTEE UPDATE
The Parish house stairs and side wall repairs were completed. There is a question as to what lies under the plywood in the Parish House basement which will be looked into since there is still a smell there. All work has been completed on the Jelleme cottage except for two storm doors. A comprehensive assessment of the rectory was done and there is a budget set for that work; the church roof - including copper and gutters - needs work; the lift needs to be reassessed. It was also noted we should have better lighting for our parking lot; it is quite dark at night. The archiving of 70 boxes of old notes and paperwork has either been completed and saved, or ready to be shredded.

COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE UPDATE
Work is continuing on the winter issue of Tidings, and it will be sent out in mid-January in advance of the Annual Meeting.

MISSION COMMITTEE UPDATE
Sixteen bags have recently been delivered to the Food Pantry, but there are many unmet needs there including more food, drivers and volunteers. Sixty meals are being distributed for the Wednesday St. Paul’s Suppers meal program, however, we also need drivers to help distribute. Laundry Love and Fairwinds gift cards have been sent. The school snacks were delivered early in the month. The prayer shawl ministry has been refreshed and island stitching groups are busy knitting them.
NOMINATING COMMITTEE UPDATE
The committee met and following the by-laws, a slate was chosen. Three Vestry positions need to be filled. The slate will be posted for two weeks on the church doors prior to the Annual Meeting, which will be Jan. 23. All officers serve one-year terms, and all have agreed to stay on.

RECTOR’S REPORT
Father Max was sent a proposal by Jay Craven regarding the use of our church kitchen on weekdays for 40 students he has coming in late January, staying through April. The Rector has the discretion to decide on what and how the Church campus is used, so after a lengthy discussion no vote was needed. Father Max suggested the Vestry discuss the possibility of a Summer Fair during the January Vestry meeting.

WARDENS’ REPORT
We are expecting the first report on the church’s bell tower and restoration of the Narthex at the end of January, which should also include the costs. Very little of the ongoing issues have to do with the leaking situation.

Dear Fellow Parishioners,
Thank you to all 150+ parishioners who have so far pledged for 2022. We have received a record $435,000 in pledges for our annual stewardship campaign, with its theme of “Love, Serve, Thrive.” That is up 22% from 2021 and is 92% of our goal of $475,000 from 200 parishioners.
Our campaign continues; we need your pledge if you have not yet pledged—and it is easy to pledge. Click here on Donate Now to make a contribution online securely. You can also download a pledge card and brochure from the Donate Now page. Mail the pledge card into the church office or, if you are at a Sunday service on the island, drop the card into the collection plate. Please contact the church office if you have any questions about our 2022 campaign or about volunteer opportunities at St. Paul’s.
