With Bulletin For July 17 Service

July 16, 2022

Dear St. Paul’s Church Family,
Tomorrow’s Gospel is a timely message for us all as we reach the halfway point of the summer season. The lesson is the classic story of the sisters Martha and Mary welcoming Jesus into Martha’s home, depicted in our marvelous stained glass window shown above. As Mary sits at the feet of Jesus listening to him, Martha stays busy “distracted by her many tasks”. It is such a good reminder to seek balance in the midst of the often overwhelming busyness of the season and not to be distracted at the expense of our spiritual wellbeing. Let’s pause for prayer, reflection, and literally to stop and smell the roses.
I ask your help in supporting our parish’s excellent music ministry by attending when possible - and inviting friends - to three upcoming events. The first is on Monday, July 25 at 8:00 p.m., Jazz Vespers with soulful vocalist Peggy Raley traveling to the island with truly accomplished Jazz musicians. Next, on Wednesday, August 10 at 8:00 p.m. pianist Tony Nalker and vocalist Bob MacDonald present Songs from the Silver Screen. Tony and Bob, recently retired U.S. Army musicians, performed the enthusiastically received Frank Sinatra tribute concert last year. They then stay with us for St. Paul’s Jazz Mass, commissioned in loving memory of Nancy Broll, on Friday, August 12 at 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, August 14 at 9:30 a.m. See you at church!
The peace and joy of Christ,
Max

                       Text: F. S. Pierpoint (1835-1917); Music: John Rutter (b. 1945)

For the beauty of the earth, for the beauty of the skies, for the love which from our birth over and around us lies:, over and around us lies: Lord of all, to thee we raise this our joyful hymn of praise. For the beauty of the hour, of the day and of the night, hill and vale and tree and flower, sun and moon and stars of light, sun and moon and stars of light: Lord of all, to thee we raise this our joyful hymn of praise. For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child, friends on earth and friends above, for all gentle thoughts and mild, for all gentle thoughts and mild: Lord of all, to thee we raise this our joyful hymn of praise. For each perfect gift of thine to our race so freely given, graces human and divine, flow'rs of earth and buds of heav'n, flow'rs of earth and buds of heav'n: Lord of all, to thee we raise this our joyful hymn, our joyful hymn of praise, this our joyful hymn of praise.

At the Communion   Love Divine     Vocalists; Joseph Gioe, Flute
Words: Bianca da Siena (d. 1434), Charles Wesley (1707-1788)
Music: Evelyn R. Larter (b. 1953), quoting Love Divine G. F. LeJeune (1841-1904)

Come down, O Love divine, seek thou this soul of mine, and visit it with thine own ardor glowing; O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear, and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing. W O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming; and let thy glorious light shine ever on my sight, and clothe me round, while still my path illuming. W Love divine, all love's excelling, Joy of heaven to earth come down, fix in us thy humble dwelling, all thy faithful mercies crown. Jesus, thou art all compassion, pure unbounded love Thou art, visit us with Thy salvation, enter every longing heart. W And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long, shall far outpass the power of human telling; for none can guess its grace, till he become the place wherein the Holy Spirit makes His dwelling.

Music Notes
The Music Meditation this morning is an instrumental excerpt from The Jazz Mass of St. Paul’s – Nantucket; the commissioned Mass composed by Tony Nalker (b. 1963). Tony performs widely in the Washington, D.C. area, currently serving as jazz pianist with the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra Pops. From 1989-2016 Tony was the pianist of the premiere jazz ensemble of the U.S. Army, the Army Blues, and served as the group’s enlisted leader. Nalker played for the highest levels of the U.S. government and military and performed on USO tours to Iraq and Afghanistan. He has also toured on musical diplomacy missions throughout the world on behalf of the U.S. State Department.

The Jazz Mass of St. Paul’s – Nantucket will receive its world premiere on Friday, August 12, 6pm, at St. Paul’s. It will be repeated on Sunday, August 14, at the 9:30am service. The Mass calls for piano, string bass, alto saxophone and drums, bass and soprano vocal soloists, and choir. The commission and performances are made possible through the support of The Nancy Broll Memorial Fund.
