With Bulletin For March 3 Service

March 03, 2024

Dear St. Paul’s Church Family,

Before Olly and our critters and I moved to Nantucket in June of 2018, so many friends in Delaware who knew the island only in the summertime asked incredulously, “You are going to live there year round!? What will you do in the winter?” Although where we lived in Rehoboth Beach was also a summer resort, during our time there we had witnessed the evolution to a year round economy to meet the needs of rapid development. This did provide many benefits to the community, but it also stripped the area of the peaceful offseason downtime.

At church tomorrow we will hear the Ten Commandments twice: in The Decalogue of A Penitential Order that we use throughout Lent, and in the first lesson from Exodus. The fourth commandment is: Remember the Sabbath Day and keep it holy. Sabbath means in Hebrew to literally rest from labor, a challenge for most of us in the often frenzied pace of this modern era. And though we are busy in the community most every day at St. Paul’s Church, we are also able to experience the offseason beauty and serenity of the island, a season of Sabbath renewal.

Thank you for your commitment to serving the needs of our island neighbors in the many ways that we now do. Our ministries are wonderfully interwoven and continue to create intergenerational and multicultural relationships - both pastoral and social. It is an honor to be called upon by non-parishioners too during their time of need. One precious moment I experienced last week after getting off the ferry in Hyannis was a kindergartner from our afterschool Ready, Set, Read program dragging his Mom over to introduce her to me. St. Paul’s Suppers continues too to create those relationships, and are now being supplied by Terry Noyes’ Movie Club crew, parishioner Chef Jack Williams and Chef David McGuire.

When we arrived those years ago, my brother Matthew warned that March on Nantucket is sometimes referred to as Hate Month. He noted that some folks are tired of being cooped up for these past months, that many are out of work and living off their diminishing savings, and so people might feel a bit edgy right about now. This is all the more reason to be intentional about observing this Lenten season of reflection and restorative Sabbath time. As we prayed on Ash Wednesday, “Restore us, good Lord, and let your anger depart from us. Favorably hear us, for your mercy is great.” See you at church!

The peace of Christ,

Max
