With Bulletin For October 1 Service

September 30, 2023

Dear St. Paul’s Church Family,

During my exit interview in Delaware in 2018, a clergy colleague asked me, “What has been your greatest accomplishment here?” Without hesitating I answered simply, “I have baptized hundreds.” I am fresh from two Baptisms today, the pleasant aroma of the scented oil of anointing still lingering after several hand washings. It is a privilege and an honor for us priests to be present with individuals and families to celebrate important moments throughout all stages of life, and Baptism is one of those moments.

I have been reading about the sacraments in one of my seminary textbooks written by the influential 16th century English theologian, Richard Hooker. I do not recommend it for bedtime reading unless you have trouble sleeping. In Volume Two entitled Worship of his comprehensive series Of the Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity, Hooker writes of the simple outward signs of our sacraments - water, oil, bread & wine - being vehicles for the Holy Spirit. Through them, he notes, “it pleaseth Almighty God to communicate by sensible means those blessings which are incomprehensible.”

Olly and I had a quick overnight in Hyannis on Thursday as I convened a diocesan Regional Assembly in the evening. A Rector in Winthrop led a discussion about collaborative ministries among parishes. Although we are thirty miles out at sea and unable to collaborate with other Episcopal churches, we do work for the common good with our interfaith partners here on the island. Thank you for your support of Nantucket Food, Fuel and Rental Assistance and our efforts to assure the wellbeing of all our island neighbors. See you at church!

The peace and joy of Christ,

Max

All glory be to God on high, Who hath our race befriended! To us no harm shall now come nigh, The strife at last is ended. God showeth his good will to men, And peace shall reign on earth again; O thank him for His goodness!  O Jesus Christ, our God and Lord, Begotten of the Father, Who hast our fallen race restored And straying sheep dost gather, Thour Lamb of God, enthroned on high, Behold our need, and hear our cry; Have mercy on us, Jesus!  O Holy Spirit, precious Gift, Thou Comforter unfailing, Do thou our troubled souls uplift, Against the foe prevailing; Since Christ for us his blood hath shed, Avert our woes and calm our dread; We trust in thee to help us! Amen.
