With Bulletin For October 2 Service

October 03, 2022

Dear St. Paul’s Church Family,

I was asked at Thursday’s Bible study what I find comforting in the midst of the natural disasters and tragedies that unfold all around us. Immediately what came to mind is the image depicted in Mark 4:35-41 of Jesus sailing with his disciples through a horrendous squall that was swamping their boat. Awakened in the stern, Jesus said, “Peace! Be still!” Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. In the storminess of life, we disciples find an inner peace in Christ. As the tempests swirl about, we are calm in knowing that we are safely in God’s hands.

Tomorrow at 9:30 is the annual service that I think God finds the most humorous and endearing of the year: The Blessing of the Animals. As is our tradition, we will gather safely inside church out of the weather with our precious critters and celebrate the blessing that our pets are to us. St. Francis taught that all of creation glorifies God, another reason for us to be proper stewards. From our Book of Common Prayer, a Prayer for Joy in God’s Creation: O heavenly Father, who hast filled the world with beauty: Open our eyes to behold thy gracious hand in all thy works; that, rejoicing in thy whole creation, we may learn to serve thee with gladness…Amen. See you at church!

The peace of Christ,

Max

Our 2023 Stewardship Campaign Kicks Off!

Blessed by your generosity, we met our 2022 Stewardship Campaign goal of $475,000, with more than 170 pledges. Thank you! We pray we are able to repeat this success for 2023, with a goal of $525,000, an increase of 10%. This week, you should receive by mail a copy of our stewardship brochure and a pledge card; you can also download these materials here on our website. We believe our goal for 2023 is conservative--adjusted for inflation, it represents almost no real increase in our pledge income. Additional funds are also critical to continue our community outreach programs. There are so many people in need, both within our parish family and in our island community, and they are truly grateful for our help. Additionally, funds are necessary to keep our campus in good working condition and to provide our dedicated staff and clergy with compensation and benefits that allow them to grow our ministries. Please join us in meeting our 2023 goal, with our campaign theme of “Serving Each Other and Our Island Community, in the Lord’s Name.” November 6 is Pledge Sunday.

O most high, Almighty good Lord God: to thee belong Praise, Glory, Honor and all blessing. Praised be my Lord God, with all His creatures: and especially for our brother the Sun, who brings us the day and who brings us the Light. Fair is he and shines with a very great splendour. O Lord, he signifies to us Thee. Praised by my Lord for our sister Moon: and for all the stars, which thou hast set clear and lovely in the Heaven. Praised be my Lord for our Brother Wind: and for Air and Cloud, calm and all weather by which thou upholdest life in all creatures. Praised be our Lord for our sister Water: who is very serviceable unto us, and humble and precious and clean. Praised be my Lord for our mother the Earth, the which doth sustain us and keep us: and bringeth forth divers fruits and flow’rs of many colours and grass. Praised be my Lord for all those who pardon one another for His love’s sake: and who endure weakness and tribulation. Blessed are those who peaceably shall endure: for Thou, O most highest, shall give them a crown. Praise ye and bless ye the Lord and give thanks unto Him: and serve Him with great humility. Alleluia, Alleluia.

Announcements

Offertory             The World Is Filled With Creatures                                    Choir

Words: Thomas A. Hassing (cont.); Music: Mona Lyn Reese (b. 1951)

Chorus: The world is filled with creatures, you can see them all around, With some that fly up to the sky or crawl upon the ground. They swim the seas, they hide in holes or use a tree to nest, But every creature I have seen is one I like the best! ♦ A nuthatch does not hatch a nut, sandpipers do not pipe The wood duck is not made of wood of any common type But birds have wings to fly the skies, their voice is always strong They let us dream of freedom and they give the gift of song. Your dog is always waiting when you come back to the house, The cat will rub along your leg and shed upon your blouse, But we hug them and we pet them, they're a gift from up above, They fill our hearts with laughter and they show us how to love. Beavers ‘n bison ‘n birdies ‘n bats! Chipmunks ‘n cheetahs ‘n camels ‘n cats! Donkeys ‘n duckies ‘n dolphins ‘n dogs, ferrets ‘n foxes ‘n fishes ‘n frogs! Chorus. Praise the Lord Most High through Brother Sun and Sister Moon, And through the Creatures of the Earth and with this joyful tune. The animals need us to live and on them we depend, They’re members of our family and each one is our friend. Chorus.
