With Bulletin For October 31 Service

October 30, 2021

Dear St. Paul’s Church Family,
I have been finally reading a book given me some years ago after a Baptism on the beach. The author’s mother, Esther de Waal, is a Welsh Celtic scholar who visited with us on several occasions and shared her wisdom brilliantly in parish forums. The book is titled The Hare with Amber Eyes - A Hidden Inheritance, written by her son Edmund de Waal. What I enjoy most about this book is its exploration of art history, always a joy for me.
De Waal references the influence of Japanese culture on French art in the late nineteenth-century, especially works like Hokusai’s Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji, which inspired Monet’s painting of a series of thirty unique haystack images. These studies of the same scene in different seasons and light remind me of Olly, Meatball and my hiking on Block Island, where our daily walks down the same paths are fresh with subtle variations every time. It is an experience of serenity. It is that way too with our walks here on Nantucket.
Parish friend, The Rev. Peter Chase, comes to the island for a couple of weeks as we head off with our critters to the other island for rest and refreshment. Come to church on Sundays at 9:30 when on island! Thank you for your prayers and generous support.
Love,
Max
Dear Fellow Parishioners,
Your support and generosity are already on display in our 2022 Stewardship Campaign, with the theme of "Love, Serve, Thrive"! So far, we have received 47 pledges totaling $185,000 with many new and increased pledges. As of Friday, the average pledge for this group was $3,600—up 22% from 2021. Our goal for 2022 is $475,000 in pledges from 200 parishioners, up about 10% from 2021. This target will help assure funding for our growing mission and ministries, particularly our substantial increase in outreach to our community, fellow parishioners and neighbors in these challenging times. There are many ways to pledge for 2022: You can mail your pledge card back to us, drop it off at the church office or drop it in the collection plate in person on Pledge Sunday or any Sunday service. You can also pledge and make pledge payments securely on line at our website here: https://stpaulschurchnantucket.org/give/give-treasure-pledge-donate-or-gift/, where you can also download a pledge card and brochure. Also try our new app — go to your app store and download the Ministry One app, which is purple with a white cross in it; just follow the instructions to get started.
Thank you!
Peter and Patsy

When I'm afflicted, poor, and low, and light and peace depart, my God beholds my heavy woe, and bears me on his heart. I waited patient for the Lord, he bowed to hear my cry; He saw me resting on his word, and brought salvation nigh. ♦ He raised me from a horrid pit, where mourning long I lay, and from my bonds released my feet, deep bonds of miry clay. Firm on a rock he made me stand, and taught my cheerful tongue to praise the wonders of his hand, in a new thankful song. ♦ How many are thy thoughts of love! Thy mercies, Lord, how great! We have not words nor hours enough, their numbers to repeat. When I'm afflicted, poor, and low, and light and peace depart,
my God beholds my heavy woe, and bears me on his heart.

Music Notes
This morning’s Music Meditation is based on the hymn, “When I’m, afflicted, poor, and low.” The hymn was written by Isaac Watts (1674-1748), based on Psalm 40.

Watts wrote educational books on geography, astronomy, grammar, and philosophy, which were widely used throughout the 18th century. He is now best known, however, for his hymns and  considered the father of English hymnody. His first collection of hymns and sacred lyrics was Horae Lyricae (1706), quickly followed by Hymns and Spiritual Songs(1707), which included “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross,” “There Is a Land of Pure Delight,” and others that have become known throughout Protestant Christendom. The most famous of all his hymns, “Our God, Our Help in Ages Past” (from his paraphrase of Psalm 90), and “Jesus Shall Reign” (part of his version of Psalm 72), were published in The Psalms of David Imitated in the Language of the New Testament… (1719).     The Hymnal 1982 lists seventeen hymn numbers to Watts.
